September 2024
This past weekend, from August 30th to September 1st, we were proud to host the Regional Transitional Justice Seminar in cooperation with BFPE Foundation. The event, which was organized under the EU Support to Confidence Building in the Western Balkans, which is funded by the European Union (EU) and implemented by the United Nations Development Programme - UNDP, gathered 40 dedicated participants from Kosovo and Serbia.
This seminar provided a vital platform for dialogue and understanding. By focusing on transitional justice and the collective memory of the 1999 conflict in Kosovo, we encouraged an environment of open communication to learn more about the fundamentals of transitional justice and exchange views on how to deal with the past responsively.
The event kicked off with a welcoming session led by Ms. Leonora Kryeziu (PIPS), Mr. Nuno Queirós (UNDP), Ms. Eva Palatova (EU Office), and Ms. Svetlana Stefanovic (BFPE). Over the course of the seminar, we had the honor to explore very important topics with great speakers and experts of Transitional Justice, such as transitional justice mechanisms with Mr. Thomas Unger, the historical context of the conflict with Ms. Sonja Biserko, and insights from humanitarian efforts with Mr. Bekim Blakaj. Dr. Gëzim Visoka and Ms. Jovana Radosavljević facilitated an important discussion on challenges and opportunities in achieving lasting peace. The weekend concluded with reflections on media and memorialization led by Mr. Abit Hoxha and Ms. Serbeze Haxhiaj.
Upon the sessions’ completion, PIPS, in collaboration with HLC Kosovo, arranged a side visit to the Documentation Center Kosovo. There participants had the opportunity to delve deeper into various narratives from the 1999 conflict through the exhibition “ONCE UPON A TIME AND NEVER AGAIN”.
The discussions were engaging and insightful, driven by a common objective to break down barriers, challenge misconceptions, and establish a solid groundwork for enduring peace.
A big thanks to everyone involved for their commitment to a future grounded in respect and mutual understanding. Let's continue to work together towards a more harmonious and united region.
The activity is made possible with the assistance of the regional project EU Support to Confidence Building in the Western Balkans, which is funded by the European Union (EU) and implemented by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
